Countdown to kickoff
23.07.2005 15:03
The Polish Idea Ekstraklasa resumes on Sunday, 24th July at 5 p.m. and all eyes are on Arka Gdynia and Legia Warszawa who play the opening match. The home side were promoted to the First Division after 2004/2005 season, which Legia finished on a third position. Both teams played together 16 meetings in which Legia recorded 9 victories, 5 draws and 2 defeats.
In the summer break Legia lost two key players – Artur Boruc (Celtic Glasgow) and Marek Saganowski (Vitoria Guimaraes). Coach Jacek Zielinski decided to focus on young and promising talents, such as the newly acquired Marcin Klatt and Sebastian Szalachowski, both of whom have a strong chance to appear in the starting eleven. 18-year-old striker Dawid Janczyk is also regarded as a big name for the near future. And Legia retained the services of Piotr Wlodarczyk, who impressed the Scottish Aberdeen with four goals in two test matches. For the goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski Sunday’s meeting will mark his debut on the Ekstraklasa pitches.
Although Legia are the match favourites, Arka hungry for the First Division success after more then 20 years of relegation may be a tough opponent for the Warsaw team who will try this season to regain the Polish Champions title.
